Being a good blogger

In the past few months, I've come to realize that 90% of doing something well comes from just giving a shit. I could elaborate, but really this is one of those common sense things that everybody will nod their head at, but doesn't sink in until maybe one day you just learn it for yourself.

At this point, I'm pretty sure I'm not a good blogger. I've got to figure out whether or not I actually care about this, or if I'm just wasting my time on something that feels like a chore rather than a passion.

The wisdom of HBO's Deadwood

Pain and damage don't end the world, or despair, or fuckin' beatin's. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you've got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen

Bush: bad president, or worst president?

When Bush won in 2004, I told a few close friends that there was a single small, silver lining: Had he lost, Bush would have been canonized by the right. But having won, Bush's mistakes would catch up to him, and he would go down in history as the worst president ever.

The Washington Post recently published five op-eds asking this very question
. I love the fact that in a sort of reverse Stephen Colbert moment, the consensus is somewhere between "Yes, worst ever" and "No, just fifth worst".

Video Friday #19: The Connells, "'74-'75"

I was the one who let you know, I was your sorry-ever-after.

2006 should have been my 15th high-school reunion, although it didn't happen. (Or, at least, I wasn't invited...) To the random person who knew me in high school, and found this blog after googling everybody in the yearbook, let me just say: I have no idea what the hell happened to me, either.

Amazing performance of "Carol of the Bells"

It's Crimmace time, y'all. My favorite Christmas song is "Carol of the Bells". (Least favorite: Little Drummer Boy. Blah.)

I'm not sure why I like it so much--it's definitely the most pugilistic sounding Christmas song, though. Probably the closest non-Christmas analogue is Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" from Requiem For A Dream, which was also used in some of the Lord Of The Rings trailers. The melody for Carol of the Bells comes from a Ukrainian folk song, and was translated (stolen) into English relatively recently, in 1936. Thanks, wikipedia. You make me look smart!

In any case, check out this amazing arrangement of Carol of the Bells by Joseph Dang. It's seven minutes, but it will probably be the best video you watch today.

How to create a sexy pop star

A fascinating clip from the soon-to-be-released-to-dvd documentary "Before The Music Dies": Take a hot but untalented girl, some software, and a hell of a lot of post production, and voila: pop drivel of the week.
