If I were to make a list of "great songs with terrible videos", this would definitely be near the top. It might have sounded like a clever idea at the time, but putting the literal interpretation of the word up onto the screen is a terrible idea. It's only a few seconds into the video, but the "wipe the smile right from your face" sequence lets you know how bad it's going to get.
Wow, great song! I remember watching this video dozens of times on MTV, but I guess I was too young and undiscerning to be bothered by how slavishly literal it was. Perhaps they did it to help the hearing impaired or non-english speakers understand what the song was about--a kind of visual captioning :-)
Don't be fooled. Sure, there's some camp value to the 70's and 80's songs I've been posting. But mostly I think they're awesome songs.
On the other hand, I'm looking over my list of videos for upcoming weeks, and there might be a little irony in there. I guess we'll know for sure after I make the final cut. :)

your videos tend to be ironic, don't they?

This song qualifies for what my wife and I think of as "Fair Music" as in "let's go to the Fair and see the hogs race!"
Other notable Fair music groups include .38 Special and The J. Giles Band.
