I like it because it is bitter, and because it is my heart.
From "The Black Riders and Other Lines" by Stephen Crane:- In the desert
- I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
- who, squatting upon the ground,
- Held his heart in his hands,
- And ate of it.
- I said, "Is it good, friend?"
- "It is bitter -- bitter," he answered;
- "But I like it
- Because it is bitter,
- And because it is my heart."

Oh my goodness! I love this poem! I recited it in college to much acclaim (well, not exactly acclaim)--there was something about it that really struck me then and though I don't have it memorized, the image has always stayed with me.
